Wessex Local Medical Committees (LMCs) is the only representative body, recognised by statute, for GPs and their Practices. The business operates in the UK across the counties of Dorset, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Bath and North East Somerset and Wiltshire. They also provide services to the Islands of Jersey and Guernsey. In total Wessex LMCs represent around 465 Practices and 3755 GPs, whether partners, salaried GPs or freelance locums. Wessex LMCs also support over 500 practice managers.
Louise Greenwood, Head of Education Development and Training at Wessex LMCs, has had a working relationship with Alex Morgan from True North for many years. When the company received national funding for coaching, mentoring and training she knew that True North would be her preferred provider.
The key business driver for the training provided by True North was to improve practice managers’ skills and personal development. The training needed to cover aspects such as delegation and appraisals. One of the main goals was was to use the funding that had already been received to give staff a sense of continued ‘investment in people’ within the company.
Wessex LMCs received training from True North in the form of workshops, conferences and both small and large group sessions. The training focused on factors such as appraisals, skills for team leading and mentoring. Louise praised Alex and the team at True North, stating that they were viewed as being “positive, down to earth and natural” by attendees. Furthermore, Louise notes that the True North team were able to use relevant knowledge and examples that trainees could relate to, which was appreciated. The practice managers loved the details particularly how to practically apply the theory, that they were already familiar with, within their daily routines.
Proof of the success of the True North programme can be seen in the positive evaluations of the training, carried out both immediately after training and again at a later stage. Louise states that based on the results of previous training “she would highly recommend the training and that the company will continue to use True North in the future”.
