Providing coaching skills for managers and directors

Following restructuring and an influx of new people, the culture and management style within Lex Vehicle Leasing had necessarily become directive and transactional. However, this was leading to high staff turnover and was unsustainable for the longer term.

Opportunity

Lex Vehicle Leasing needed to provide managers with the necessary skills and competencies to be able to integrate non-directive, nonjudgemental coaching into their management style and therefore help people to find the most effective ways for them to convert information to knowledge and behaviour. In the process they wanted to create a critical mass of a coaching management style that would enable a return to a more empowering and inclusive culture.

“True North took the time to understand the business, the needs and the environment in which it was operating. They demonstrated exactly the values we were wanting from the programme”, says Karen Bush, Training Manager at LVL. Throughout the programme (four sessions over twelve weeks), the momentum was sustained with practical assignments.

Results

“We are seeing a higher level of motivation, empowerment, engagement and development because people now understand what coaching is really about and the impact it can have. The programme has created an appetite elsewhere in the business for this type of development.” Having been through the programme the Training Department staff, who were acting as assessors for the Sales Academy, have seen their confidence grow to the point that they now act as coaches and assessors. Because of its value, coaching is being adopted in other parts of the business. Lex Vehicle Leasing has seen a growth in the demand for this type of development because of its effectiveness. One delegate commented:“This was billed as training and it’s not - this is development.”
